“Guys caleb here with dslr video shooter and i am super excited for today s s video because we actually have a working ninja five from adam us actually you watching it right now. This is the gh 5s going over hdmi to the ninja. 5. We re recording in cinema.
4k or 4096 by 2160 at 10 bit. 4 to 2. Which is crazy exciting for something this small look at it it s so cute so before we jump in and go over some details about this new recorder. There s three things you need to know number.
One this video is in no way sponsored by adam asst. They did not pay me to say anything they in fact aren t even watching this before it goes up on youtube. But they did send me this pre production model for a couple days in fact i ve only had it for about half a day. And i m gonna have to send it back to tomorrow or the day after thing number 3 since this is a pre production model.
It s not the final unit that actually ship there will be some slight changes and some things might be a little different from the final unit. I know specifically we might see some changes to the interface so as we look at the menus. And things here in a little bit that stuff is subject to change as they prepare to release the final unit. Which is going to happen so for those who don t know what the ninja 5 is i m gonna briefly go over that essentially it is a seven hundred dollar hdr monitor and recorder that can record 4k up to 60 frames per second at 42 to 10 bit meaning.
It will take care of cameras like the upcoming z6. Which has ten bit output in cameras. Like what i m shooting with right now the gh 5s with that 4 to 2 10. Bit.
This is a fully capable hdr monitor with 1000 nits for its brightness. Which is insanely bright as you can see it s pretty much blown out on camera. Because the brightness is turned all the way up it is loaded with the syst features. It s a completely capable amazing monitor at the same time it s a video recorder.
Which is insane in the actual size of the monitor is 5 inches. I will note and we ll talk about this here in a second that it s going to look a little lighter to you guys. Because i have a big honkin ssd hanging off the side. And there will be smaller ssds that will shrink things significantly and that brings us to what comes in the box.
The unit that i have here the pre production model came in a really nice box in said box..
There was the recorder itself a power adapter and it came with a bunch of different connections for international use this really cool little device that we ll talk about for getting external power to the monitor. If you don t want to use a battery and the unit also came with one of the little caddy adapters. So essentially. It s a case for ssds that you can use straight out of the box.
Which is great. But we don t care about that stuff we care about the actual ninja v. When you start looking at this thing. There s a couple things you re going to notice when it comes to inputs and outputs on one side.
We have hdmi in and out so it does do pass through flipping. It to the other side. There s a cute little power button. A mic line input.
A headphone output and a remote jack on the back of the unit. There is a sony f style or mpf battery plates. There s a nice release button to get those on and off and then we have the ssd sled. Which will accept the animus caddies.
So when it comes to power. Obviously you can throw a battery on there and you re good to go but in the box there is this thing. Which is essentially a dummy. Sony npf battery with a standard dc jack and that works perfectly with the power adapter that also comes in the box.
So you can plug this thing in hook. It all up and you can run this thing you know indefinitely off of mains. You could also in theory use this thing to get power from a v. Mount battery or any other standard system that we use for powering cameras.
When it comes to ssds like i said standard ones will hang off of the side for this recorder. But there will be custom made ssds that you can pick up that are really cute and small and they ll fit beautifully so when it came to powering this thing up i grabbed my gh 5. Since i figured this will be a very popular combination powered up a camera and the monitor. I did notice a to startup time to get this thing fired up so hopefully that is just a pre production model and it won t be in the final.
But yeah it took a long time oh my geez five..
I started with 4k 24 frames per second 10 bit 4 2. 2. And things worked just fine as zero issues. And it also worked when flipping over to 4k 60 frames per seconds.
All the way up to 10 bit and that just blows my mind. The animus is taking those specs from their beast. Over here. The shogun inferno.
And the ninja inferno and bringing that all the way down to this adorable 700 recorder. I m also excited to try this with the nikon z6 when it comes out and see what kind of footage. I can get off of a full frame. 10 bit camera so stay tuned for that here on the channel and then when it comes to raw.
Unfortunately. We have no way at this time to do any raw or prores raw. Because there s no specs set up for hdmi. It s all done with sdi.
So if that changes. I would totally expect adam us to do a firmware update. I haven t been told this. But i m guessing because they re awesome.
That s something that they would consider doing when it comes to using the actual monitor. It was pretty much a breeze on this unit. I have here you can see it s a little different in how you navigate things compared to the previous recorders from adam us. So we kind of have a bar at the bottom with a couple different colored modes in those different modes.
You have several tools you can turn on and off. And you can actually swipe through them. Which is really slick. I actually like this new style because instead of having to open up a full menu system and then make changes you can just tap them on and off at the bottom of the screen.
Now if you do want to go in there and change..
How all the assist features work you just tap the little gear icon over to the right that ll bring up a menu system where you can dial in you know how your waveform and vectorscope zebras. False color and all that stuff work just like on the larger recorder monitors. We have all those various sections including kind of the waveform and then the various angle viewing. Anamorphic related stuff and framing and then the settings or the monitor settings so activating luntz hdr including atom hdr.
Which is amazing. And it s also on this monitor just like all the other modern atomists recorders. So getting into final thoughts. And what i think about this little device here s the scoop again.
I m not being paid to say this. But i think this thing is worth 700. If it was just a monitor the fact that for 700 bucks were getting an insane hdr monitor that also can record up to 60 frames per second in 4k with 42 to 10. Bit is insane guys.
This is ridiculous. A thousand nit brightness has these adorable little ssds so far the battery life has been phenomenal. I haven t fully been able to test that but i m definitely noticing a difference compared to this guy back here at the seven inch shogun inferno. So there s really not much to dislike especially.
When you think about other monitor options like the small hd. Which you can see here next to the ninja. 5. For kind of a size comparison that monitor the small hd.
Focus is five to six hundred dollars. So for one to two hundred dollars. More you obviously move up to a way better monitor when it comes to quality and features. But also a killer recorder.
Which just blows my mind. I don t know how adam s. Is going to be making money off of these quite frankly. So that s just a slam dunk.
There are some other things to keep in mind..
And i m curious to see how adam s. Is going to use this in the future. And that is kind of a secret. Little jack on the back of the recorder.
So if you look in the bottom crevices of the battery plate on the back of this thing. You ll notice. There s a little what looks like kind of a 30 pin header. There and essentially things could plug into that header.
So what does that mean what s that for well. My guess is it s a way to tap into the pcb inside of this monitor meaning that adams could make more little things like this power adapter that connect and eunuch eight with this monitor recorder. And what does that mean well we could potentially see little bricks like this that have sdi so we could do raw or maybe little wireless options or who knows what kind of little goodies adam us could create so that kind of flexibility on this thing. Also is a slam dunk.
The fact that this thing could potentially grow over time. We could have add ons to keep using it as tech changes here on our industry. Which as we know happens quite a lot these days. So all that is amazing now so far.
I ve said nothing. But good things about this there are a couple things that kind of bum me out hardly deal breakers. But i figured i d mention them here obviously we have the startup time which could change and all of this could change in the final version and finally the noise you may have noticed throughout this whole video a slight hiss. I ll shut up for a second there s actually fans in both of these recorders kind of blowing right now it s honestly pretty quiet considering this thing is recording and how small it is but if you re doing something like i am right now where here s my microphone.
There s a recorder with a fan running probably not a good idea so that s the scoop guys really i don t want to sound like i m trying to make adam us a bunch of money. But the point is i don t know how you can lose with this thing 700 for a killer monitor that happens to also be one of the most advanced and cute tiny recorders out today so that s the ninja five unfortunately i have to ship this thing out either this afternoon or tomorrow and then wait with the rest of you guys for the final version to drop and i m sure that s going to be happening before we know it and then we can do some more videos on this thing. And really put it to work so thank you guys so much for watching. And i ll see you guys in the next video.
